Switzerland's high-altitude sun will retail

Image
Solar panels will hang on the longest dam in the country At an altitude of 2500 m above sea level, the construction of Switzerland's largest high-altitude photovoltaic (solar) power plant has begun. Its capacity will be 2.2 MW - enough to provide electricity to 740 households. The solar power plant is being built by the Axpo energy company. The plan is to finish the work in September, but the weather may interfere with it. All materials for the station have to be delivered by helicopter; bad weather will limit its capabilities. The solar station will cost the customer $ 6 million. Alpine location of the solar station will make it more efficient. So high above sea level means fewer clouds and other weather troubles blocking the batteries from the sun. The station will be built on the longest dam in Switzerland - 1054 m. The reservoir, which has been operating the Lint-Limmern hydroelectric power station since 1968, has simply increased the volume of the natural lake Muttsee. It is...

Jetpack goes to war

Image
Agreement reached on the sale of the aircraft to the armed forces   California-based JetPack Aviation (JPA) is one of the world's first true jetpacks. This long flight time device has been advertised primarily for entertainment.   David Mayman, founder, CEO and chief pilot of JPA, was the chief operator of his brainchild - he himself was happy to demonstrate the work of jetpacks. The company assumed that from pure entertainment, the flying device would someday turn into a commercial product: the JB series was being prepared for sale.   On Monday, it turned out that the sale had already taken place - and the JPA client was not a private individual, but, as stated in a press release, an unknown military customer from Southeast Asia. This customer will receive two JB-12 backpacks, for each of which $ 400,000 will be paid. The delivery is expected to be made in the next six months.   The JB-12 is a new model. Until it was shown to the public, there were only images. In t...

Spotify is no coincidence

Signify, which produces smart lighting solutions, has presented a wide range of new products - this is a solution with "gradient" technology, and so-called filament lamps, smart bathroom lighting, and equally clever ceiling lamps. You won't be able to tell about everything at once, so I'll start with the most unexpected, but useful thinks Joseph Marc Blumenthal.  For the first time in history, as the vendor assures, there was an integration of music and lighting. Philips Hue smart lamps and Spotify music service will now understand each other when syncing a user profile. This will allow, for example, to organize a party with light music. Here, the color and brightness of the lamps will not just randomly change, but under the characteristics of the playing track. You can notice that this has already been implemented, for example, in large stationary speakers, which are just designed for parties or events where powerful mobile sound is needed. Joseph Marc Blumentha'...

Thinking of re-organizing your business? What you need to do first

Image
Higher profit margins, increased customer satisfaction, a more attractive HR brand are some of the obvious reasons you are considering organizing your business. Defining goals and metrics Before starting improvements and simplifications of business processes in the company, it is worth determining the goals that you want to achieve. The optimal number of targets is from three to five. Answers to the following questions can help in their formulation: ● What part of the business needs improvement the most?      ● Changes in which areas of business will bring greater impact to the company?      ● By changing what business processes will we improve the day-to-day work of the company?      ● What simplifications will lead to successful company results?      The answers to the questions need to be transformed into goals, and then the metrics that are appropriate for each goal must be determined. For example, if one of your goals is t...

Intangible Motivation: 10 Ways to Boost Employee Morale

Image
Each leader wants his team to be cohesive and eager to fight. Only if employees are with the company at heart, they show real creativity. In this article, I will talk about non-material motivation, about everything that does not concern money and salary. What can make employees work like never?   # 1. Privilege Privileges allow you to receive special opportunities and powers that are not available to others. They appear because the employee has some special achievements. The privileges themselves are very different: from the ability to enter the boss's office without knocking to the use of official cars. Sometimes we don’t even think about how simple privileges can be, and this is a great way to motivate. No. 2. Symbols Here we are talking about external designations: medals, badges, plaques on the doors of the office. People like it. Bright symbols mean something to them. I think you noticed that some are even ready to fight and compete for them. The only mistake is to give symbol...

Facebook's UNI3 Robot Dogs Update

Image
Facebook has helped Unitree's robot dog technology learn to adapt to movement in any environment. The developers of the US company assure that Rapid Motor Adaptation (RMA) is the first such technology based on self-learning. Now robots explore the environment and interact with it, adapting to it and making independent decisions: how to proceed. Previously, robotic dogs acted according to an algorithm: thanks to it, they could dance, overcome obstacles, climb stairs or bring any objects. However, now Belka and Strelka will have technologies with end-to-end training, during which robotic dogs will begin to independently understand exactly how to change the position of the limbs to continue moving - they have no prior knowledge. It will take a matter of fractions of a second to decide. The technology was immediately tested in a real experiment, during which robotic dogs easily moved along sandy, rocky, or country roads, overcame areas with tall grass and other obstacles, for example, ...

Towards Big Data

Image
Today, business competition is won by those who are better, faster, and more accurately assess risks, test hypotheses, and launch new products based on data. Retail, with its hundreds of thousands of customers, points of sale, and merchandise, is the real front for data-driven technology adoption, and fuel retail is no exception.  Towards Big Data Data processing technologies did not appear yesterday. But before arriving at sophisticated systems for working with big data, companies must go through a phased process of technological maturation. The first steps relate to automating reporting and creating a single version of the truth for data-driven decision-making. Then - combining data from a large number of sources to build flexible business intelligence based on specialized Business Intelligence (BI) products. When there is a lot of data, they have different structures and must be processed at different speeds for different tasks, the stage of implementation of Big Data technologi...

Elon Musk bets on Tesla Bot

Image
How popular will an anthropomorphic robot be?   Tesla Bot helped Elon Musk rise to second place on the list of the richest people in the world. After the presentation, at which the businessman announced the release of a new android assistant, his fortune increased by $ 1.5 billion. Investors were not even embarrassed by the fact that the finished prototype of the car was not shown on stage. Musk promised that the new robot will go to the store, deal with other everyday problems, and, most likely, will not harm a person.  Joseph Blumenthal  with details. There have already been a lot of anthropomorphic robots on the market: Japanese, South Korean, and American companies offered their versions. But perhaps the most eccentric entrepreneur of our time, Elon Musk, again found something to surprise and showed the Tesla Bot concept. The difference between this robot and all other anthropomorphic ones is that it looks completely like a human. The model has the same body proportio...

Artificial intelligence: a glorious future for mobile apps

Image
Already, you can see how machines and AI can perform simple tasks, but development trends show that soon, artificial intelligence can really reach the stage where the software will independently write codes and perform serious functions.   First, AI helps developers to create better software, automatically test code, and find bugs. With the help of bots and testing tools, you can significantly improve the entire software development cycle. And second, AI allows developers to focus their attention on usability and customer experience. Simple examples of this are predictive text input on smartphones and chatbots, which simplifies communication with consumers. AI and data personalization The ability of AI to analyze patterns of behavior and compare them with large amounts of data helps to determine the needs and preferences of a particular person. This allows you to simplify the selection among the many positions in the market and retain interested users. Productivity increase Artific...

Apple Jobs vs. Apple Cook

Image
How in ten years the iPhone maker became the master of the ecosystem On August 24, 2011, Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO of Apple. Tim Cook took his place. Many experts then expressed doubts about the future of the corporation without its charismatic founder. Service and method dominance Since then, Apple has become the most valuable company in the world - its market capitalization has grown by 600%, approaching $ 2.5 trillion. Apple gadgets are used by more than a billion people, and the company itself regularly continues to update financial reporting records. Revenue for the third quarter of this year was $ 81.4 billion - almost three times more than the company earned in the same quarter of 2011. “This is arguably the most successful transition from one powerful leader to another in corporate history,” says Joseph Marc Blumenthal.  “Honestly, perhaps Apple needed more inspiration and politics than a founder prone to manual control and work to the point of exhaustion. It's about m...

5 ways to reduce internal cybersecurity threats

Image
A network security threat can come from any direction, but here we will consider protection from internal (insider) threats.   Joseph Marc Blumenthal  - President of BluLife, covers the issues of security and storage of online publications.  Cybersecurity has traditionally focused on keeping outside intruders out of an organization's IT resources. But it is important not to lose sight of threats from insiders as well. An employee may sell confidential data to a competitor, engage in cyber vandalism for revenge, or take other actions to harm the company and its data. The cybersecurity threat from insider cybersecurity is vast and includes both accidental and deliberate actions. Here are 5 ways to help you improve the security of your organization. 1. Limit the “blast radius” The first thing you can do to mitigate your company's internal cybersecurity threats is to minimize the damage that an attacker might cause. We often refer this to as “blast radius limitation”. ...
